Respiration & Health

Upper Respiratory Infections  URI: Common  Warm mucus + moist + Germs in air = killer sneeze and/or cough

Common Cold  Virus infection  OVER 200 strains

Influenza  Virus caused, starts as an URI, BUT can spread to the stomach

 Hard to tell if you have the flu:  Fever (usually high)  Headache  Tiredness (can be extreme)  Cough  Sore throat  Runny or stuffy nose  Body aches  Diarrhea and vomiting (more common among children than adults)  Flu shots/nasal spray in October/Nov.

Bronchitis  Coughing + a lot of mucus  Inflammation of ?  Two different types

Bronchitis  A. Acute: Viral caused then open to bacteria  B. Chronic: Due to irritation, caused by smoking.

Strep throat  Bacterial infection  CAN spread to heart

LUNG DISORDERS

Pneumonia  Bacterial, virus, fungus, parasite  Lungs fill with mucus

Tuberculosis  Bacterial infection of the lungs  Chest pain, fever, fatigue  Spread by casual contact

 In 2004, mortality and morbidity statistics included 14.6 million chronic active TB cases, 8.9 million new cases, and 1.6 million deaths, mostly in developing countries.[2] In addition, a rising number of people in the developed world are contracting tuberculosis because their immune systems are compromised by immunosuppressive drugs, substance abuse, or HIV/AIDS.developing countries[2]developed worldimmune systems immunosuppressive drugssubstance abuseHIVAIDS

Emphysema  Destruction of bronchioles and alveoli, air trapped in alveoli which often burst.  Create less surface area.

Cystic Fibrosis  LETHAL inherited disease.  Lots of coughing, thick mucus, bacteria.  Clogs passage way

Pulmonary fibrosis  Particles in the lung (sand, dust, coal)  Fibrous tissue begins to build in lungs.

Lung Cancer  Irritation causes thickening of bronchi, loss of cilia  Abnormal cells break off and spread to new area
