1 Understanding USDA’S SEVERE NEED BREAKFAST PROGRAM

2 What is severe need breakfast? Severe need breakfast is a USDA program that provides additional breakfast reimbursement to schools who serve at least 40% or more of school lunches to children who qualify for free or reduced price meals.

4 DOES YOUR SCHOOL QUALIFY? Served 40 % or more total free and reduced lunches to students in the second preceding year. Eligibility is determined by school as listed in the Wisconsin School Directory. Schools must apply for severe need breakfast program rates when the online contract is renewed each year.

5 40% or more means… That at least 40% of all lunches were served to students who are eligible for free or reduced priced meals. Not to be confused with the number of students who are eligible for free or reduced priced meals.

6 The term School means… Each school as listed in the Wisconsin School Directory regardless of the number of serving sites. For example: West School District serves 300 students grades K-12 in one building East School District serves 3000 students grades pre K-12 in 4 buildings Schools listed in the directory include: West High School West Middle School West Elementary School Schools listed in the directory include: Hope High School Maple Middle School East Elementary School Perfect Primary School

7 How to apply… Must be completed and updated each year Must enter the number of lunches from two years ago for each participating school. May have some schools in breakfast and other schools in severe need breakfast program

8 Updating the contract Main policy page – (Policy Statement Part II) – Indicate which schools (sites) will be participating severe need breakfast – It is important to note that some schools may be participating in both severe need and non-severe need breakfast. Schedule A – Update the number of meals by category – The computer will calculate the percentage

13 Submitting claims for severe need breakfast Severe need breakfast is entered separately from regular breakfast rates.

16 REMEMBER Severe Need Breakfast is… Determined by Schools which may or may not be located in the same building. Based on the number of lunches served in the second preceding school year. Applied for annually when submitting the on-line contract. Submit separate claims for each program – Regular Breakfast – Severe Need Breakfast
