4 Alliteration The repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of a word in a sentence Alliteration is commonly used in poetry and song lyrics Example: Sarah sells sea shells at the sea shore

5 Personification Giving human characteristics to inanimate Objects Can also be used for abstract ideas Example: Lightning danced across the sky

6 Flashback A scene set earlier than the main story Most commonly used in movies or Novels Example: Back in the day when Julia was young…

7 Irony When the reader expects something to happen And the opposite occurs Mostly used for humor Example: A man who is a traffic cop gets his license suspended for unpaid parking tickets

8 Hyperbole Exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally Can also be used as a rhetorical device From Greek word meaning “excess” Example: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse

9 Metaphor A comparison of two or more things NOT using “like” or “as” Example: The snow is a white blanket

10 Simile A comparison of two or more things USING “like” or “as” Example: As cold as ice

11 Onomatopoeia A word the has a sound associated with it Creates a sound or imagery Example: Buzz, Splash, Bang, Wack
