26 EXPECTATIONS OF THE PARTICIPANTS

27 Historical: students will – read Osprey’s Guide to the First World War: Western Front (short ebooks) – examine the issues of race, gender, and class during the First World War through Monash University’s free online “100 Stories” video presentations. – write a 10-page essay after the trip incorporating what they have researched and experienced. – HISTORY STUDENTS who want to use this course toward European history degree credits: You will need to also read Paul Fussell’s The Great War and Modern Memory and write a slightly longer essay (12 pages) incorporating history and their own experiences. Practical: students will learn – French phrases/greetings – the dos and don’ts of French culture – how to prepare for the trip: insurance, money, communication, and packing. – how to navigate various forms of public transportation and accommodations. – explore students’ interests in each location to make the most of their free time.
