2 Target Audience High school athletes grades 9-12 Sports ranging from: basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, weight lifting, swimming, cross country, track, tennis, wrestling, lacrosse

3 Introduction Many high school teens involved in various sports. Often unaware risks associated with physical activity. Risks can be reduced/eliminated by taking proper precautions. Learning certain skills can enhance performance. Skills: nutrition, avoiding harmful substances, and controlling emotions.

4 Are you getting enough? Carbohydrates –57% of energy –Two types: simple vs. complex –Sources include: grains, pastas, breads Fats –30% of energy –Two types: unsaturated vs. saturated –Sources include: dairy products and oils

5 Are you getting enough? Proteins –13% of energy –Sources include: eggs, meat, poultry, fish Ways to replenish glycogen stores –Consume complex carbs 2 hours after exercise –Good choices: fruit, bagels, yogurt

6 Avoiding Steroids What are anabolic steroids? –Anabolic = building body tissue –Powerful drugs taken to boost athletic performance & improve physical appearance –Also known as “roids, juice, hype, pump”

10 Sportsmanship What is sportsmanship? –Playing fair –Following the rules of the game –Respecting the judgment of referees & officials –Treating opponents with respect

11 Sportsmanship Demonstrating good sportsmanship –Cheer teammates on with positive statements & avoid trash talking –Acknowledge and applaud good plays –Whether you win or lose, congratulate your opponents on a game well played

12 Sportsmanship Ways to apply good sportsmanship –A referee makes a call that you do not agree with- do not argue with him –After losing a game, shake that opponent team’s hands and congratulate them
