2 About Place2Be Who we are National award-winning charity established in 1994, dedicated to supporting schools to improve children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing What we do School-based counselling services for children aged 4-14 Consultation and advice for parents, carers and school staff Training and capacity building for all professionals working with children Where we work 22 areas across the UK, in partnership with 257 schools providing direct services accessible to over 105,000 children

3 Context of mental health in the UK today In society Over 1 million children and young people in the UK have a mental health problem: nearly half drop out of full time education by age 15 Over 90% of young offenders had a mental health problem in childhood 1 in 6 adults have a mental health problem, and for the majority the early symptoms we present and treatable before the age of 14 In schools The average minimum waiting time for an initial appointment with local CAMHS service is now 12 weeks The 2014 SEND Code of Practice has a new focus on social, mental and emotional health replacing social, emotional and behavioural development The recently released DFE Blueprint on Counselling in Schools lays out best practice for schools

4 Key elements of a whole school approach to mental health & wellbeing Appropriate capacity to support wide range of student needs through trusted & de-stigmatising interventions Access to clinical expertise to provide and/or supervise therapeutic interventions for children Access to staff support around safeguarding, SEND, working with parents and working with other agencies Putting in place robust evaluation methodology to assess improvement to children and families’ emotional wellbeing and learning
