History of Robotics Section 3

Objectives By the end of this unit the students will be able to: 1.State what Robotics is 2.State why Robotics is important 3.State how and when Robotics began 4.Where is Robotics now?

What is a Robot/Robotics? Robotics or a ROBOT is a mechanical arm, a manipulator designed to perform many different tasks and capable of repeated, variable programming. To perform its assigned tasks, the robot moves parts, objects, tools, and special devices by means of preprogrammed motions and points.

Importance of Robotics Robotics play a lot larger role in our lives than we think. Everyone knows how Robots are used in the automotive industry to help assemble vehicles but what about other industries?

How and When of Robots The word “Robot” first originated in 1921 in Czechoslovakia at a play and is derived from their word “robota” meaning forced labor. Forty years later the modern technology of industrial robots began. The story back then was about a scientist and his son who develop technology to manufacture robots to do all physical

How and When of Robots Labor. Finally after constant improvements they developed the perfect robot. The problem was this robot goes out of control and attacks humans. In 1942, robotics took their first positive role by being portrayed in a positive way to assist humans.

How and When of Robots In the 1960’s robots were introduced to industry. Initially, robots sold for an average of $25,000 with a life expectancy of about eight years, cost approximately $4.00 per hour to operate and had to compete with humans for jobs. During the 1970’s, the average prices of robots increased to approximately $45,000, life expectancy of $5.00

How and When of Robots Per hour. In 1980 there were 4,000 robots in the US and 26,000 worldwide In the mid 1980’s, there were 17,000 robots with an average price of $60,000 and life expectancy of 15 years. Operating costs were $5.50 per hour for a robot and $14.50 for human labor

How and When of Robots There are over 650,000 robots in use today with a life expectancy of 17 years and average price of $72,000, as well as an hourly rate of $7.00 per day. Average human daily rate is $24.00 an hour.
