The introductory material which gives the setting, creates the tone, presents the characters, and presents other facts necessary to understanding the story. It also gives you a glimpse into a character’s normal daily life.

6 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Inciting Force/conflict The event or character that triggers the conflict. This is something that takes them away from their normal daily life or routine. It starts the rising action.

7 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Resolution Inciting Force/conflict

8 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Inciting Force/conflict It is the essence of fiction. It creates plot. The conflicts we encounter can usually be identified as one of four kinds. (Man versus…Man, Nature, Society, or Self) We will come back to those later.

9 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Rising Action
A series of events that builds from the conflict/inciting force and ends with the climax. It includes lots of obstacles.

11 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Climax The climax is the high point of the story for the reader. Frequently, it is the moment of the highest interest or excitement and greatest emotion. The point at which the outcome of the conflict can be predicted.

13 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Falling Action The events right after the climax.

14 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Resolution

15 ELEMENTS OF PLOT Resolution (Denouement) Rounds out and concludes the action. It may show the new “daily life” for the characters.
