1 I am reading Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. The protagonist is twenty-six year old Jean Louis “Scout” Finch. Jean Louis, a New York city resident, has returned to Maycomb, for her yearly visit to this rural conservative town in southern Alabama. Aunt Alexandra, a pushy southern-belle, quickly voices her disapproval of Jean Louis’ free- spirited ways and fashion choices. Jean Louis notices the declining health of her beloved father Atticus. Henry, the loyal hometown boyfriend, proposes to her for the fifth time; she declines his proposal. Soon after her arrival, Jean Louis stumbles upon a meeting of the racist Citizens Council. She discovers that her boyfriend and father are in attendance. The most interesting scene so far was Jean Louis eavesdropping on the Citizens Council meeting. I expected her to interrupt and express her disappointment and disgust because she has been portrayed as a free-thinker. Perhaps she was hoping that Atticus and Henry would stop the racist ranting. I now understand that this moment is a turning point for Jean Louis. She realizes that her father and her boyfriend do not share one of core beliefs (how one sees people, the world and the future.) This realization is sending her into inner turmoil. 2 I am reading Chew on This: Everything You Don’t Want to Know about Fast Food by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson. The book begins with the story Charlie Nagreen a teenager selling a meatball sandwich in 1885; the authors claim that this was the beginning of the American hamburger. It was not popular because people considered it food for poor people. Walt Anderson opened White Castle; it was the first restaurant that sold burgers. The McDonald brothers started the Speedee Service System. Ray Kroc, a salesman, went into business with the McDonald brothers and eventually took control of the business and expanded it. Thus, the fast food business was born. It is interesting and disturbing how the McDonald’s franchise began. Though the Mc Donald brothers created the system that is now the heart of the fast food industry, they did not have the business savvy to expand. Ray Kroc, who became their business partner, seized the moment. It is sad that the in the end the McDonald brothers were not allowed to even keep the name McDonalds. Ray Kroc took it as a part of a buy-out deal. From reading about this I learned that people should select business partners very carefully, and they should protect their ideas.
