2. What does it mean to be a good digital citizen in the 21st Century and Online?
Throughout this presentation we will look at the following:
Netiquette
Copyright and Fair Use
Plagiarism
Safety on the Web
Safety on your Computer

3. Netiquette Netiquette is simply having and displaying manners online.
Here are a few tips to remember:
Do not write in all capital letters.
Use appropriate grammar and spelling.
Be honest and considerate to others.
Do not insult others.
Surf/shop secure websites.
Always use discretion when creating online account profiles.

4. Copyright and Fair Use
Copyright is the set of legal rights that authors have over their work.
Fair Use allows limited copying of the author’s work without permission. This is appropriate to use if using a small piece of the author’s work to demonstrate or teach a lesson.

5. Plagiarism Plagiarism is:
stealing someone’s work without giving credit to the original author
not using appropriate quotation marks when using the author’s exact words
giving incorrect information about the source of the quotation
changing the words, but copying the sentence structure of the source without giving credit to the author

6. Safety on the Web How to keep students safe when using technology:
As educators, we want to allow our students to use resources available to them, however, there are some precautions to remember when students are using the Web. Although school computers are monitored, students may have Internet access outside of school. The next slide will display some guidelines and reminders to share with students before and during their time on the Web.

7. Safety Guidelines
Students never need to give out personal information. (name, birthday, age, etc.)
Students need to stay away from Internet strangers. Students know not to talk to strangers face-to-face, but they need to apply this same knowledge on the Internet.
Students should always tell their teacher and parents what sites they visit.
Students should only visit appropriate sites for children.
Students should not cyber bully or become the victim of a cyber bully.

8. Safety on your Computer How safe is your computer?
Listed below are a few ways to make sure your computer stays safe:
Use anti-virus software and keep it up to date
Use a firewall
Install security patches
Control/monitor your
Avoid file sharing
