Radar-WG: Our team Alessandro Chiariello (FMI) Roger Deslandes (BoM) Jaymie Gadal (MSC) Martin Hagen (DLR) Wilfried Jacobs (DWD) Paul Joe (MSC) Peter Lang (DWD) Bojan Lipovscak (HRM) Elena Saltikoff (FMI) Andreas Schaffhauser (ZAMG)

Starting points for our meeting Last EUMETCAL-seminar (Oct 2008 – Feb 2009) Evaluation of this seminar 35 applications for the last seminar  high demand Online meeting of our group (5 May 2009), decided –next EUMETCAL radar seminar: autumn 2010 – late winter 2011 (northern hemisphere!) –same target group (forecasters) –similar seminar content and seminar structure –preliminary distribution of work fields to "responsible trainers" –next meeting: to consider what to do with polarimetric radar and how to handle "hydromet" –fixing of tasks and distribution of work

General points of discussions (I) - decisions Which level? –basics mainly in pre-reading material –advanced diagnostics: during the three parts (self study, online and classroom) Radar locations, which technique is being used? –S-band (32) / C-band (157) / X-band (1) How to make the participants work with pre-reading-material? –We have already a quiz  better monitoring of activities required –preparation of PDF-format of pre-reading material  easier reading How to review/improve pre-reading material? –Utilization of pre-reading from MSC-course (contact: Jaymie) –Distribution of themes to responsible members of our WG for consideration –will be put into Virtual Library

General points of discussions (II) New task for participants –to prepare action plans for their work after the seminar –may be a 4th phase (wrap up): outcome? Pat Parrish (COMET), presented modules about –Squall line / bow echo (developed in co-operation with BoM) –Warm conveyer belt good examples for practical orientated modules

Decisions (I): Next seminars 1.October 2010 – February 2011 –Polarimetric: pre-reading and during classroom part ("apetizer") –Doppler: "Full module" (according to evaluation of last seminar) –opera products: Classroom –Hydrology: Pre-reading material 2.Further seminar: Autumn 2012 – 2013, probably –new module about polarimetric

Decisions (II): Tasks – Milestones (2010) March –questionnaire –before March: online meeting? May (meeting in Helsinki) –syllabus ready –1st announcement –fixing of final steps Summer –online meeting? –2nd announcement September –selection of participants –preparation of course web page (MOODLE) October: Opening of seminar

Decisions (III): Responsibilities 1.Doppler: Elena (stratiform) / Roger&Wilfried (Convection) 2.Convection (generally): Roger & Wilfried 3.Orographic effects: Andreas (Paul) 4.Cold front: Bojan 5.Warm front: Peter 6.Non-meteorological effects: Elena&Paul 7.Hydrology: Elena 8.Opera products: Bojan 9.Polarimetric: Jaymie (pre-reading) / Martin (classrom)

Harmonisation with other training about radar 1.ERAD (Aurora Bell): More for scientists 2.MSC: Co-operation agreed 3.COMET: To be considered (e.g., training of colleagues from China for Olympic games)

Estimation of working costs Travel Centra-minutes? prepared during the next very few weeks
