WHERE WE ARE STRUCTURE OUR VESSEL PUBLICATIONS CO-OPERATION INSTITUTE OF OCEANOLOGY POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES ( IO-PAS ) INSTITUTE OF OCEANOLOGY POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES ( IO-PAS ) INSTITUTE Sopot

Atlantic Baltic The Gulf of Gdansk SOPOT *

Founded in 1983 as the successor to the Marine Station of the Academy in existence in Sopot since 1953 Number of employees : 178 ( September 2003 ) including: 13 professors, 6 assoc. prof., and 37(+5) doctors Essential components: 5 scientific departments research vessel OCEANIA library Regional Oceanographic Database

The Institute runs POSTGRADUATED STUDIES in oceanography and is entitled to award Ph.D. degrees as well as D.Sc. (habilitation) degrees in earth science - oceanography. consists of 36 members Half of them are from the outside the Institute. There are 9 members of the Academy of Sciences. 8 STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS OF RESEARCH II. Natural and anthropogenic variability of the Baltic environment I.Ocean impact on climate and climate change consequences in European seas III. Contemporary changes in ecosystems of shelf sea coasts IV. Genetics and physiology of marine organisms; the basics of marine biotechnology

Study problems (e.g.) - Radiation fluxes in the sea - atmosphere system. - Energetics of primary production. - Mass transfer by aerosol emission. - Thermohaline circulation in the Nordic Seas. - Climate change effects in the Arctic ecosystems.

14. Genetics variability change in the exploited marine animal species. 15. Physiological mechanisms in organisms functioning in the marine environment. 16. Regulating processes in the marine bacteria cells and their biotechnological potential. - Genetics variability in the marine animal species. - Regulating processes in the marine bacteria cells and their biotechnological potential. - A nthropogenic substances and their transport through bio-geo-chemical barriers - Chemical and biological markers of anthropogenic stress. Study problems (cont. e.g.)
