2. 2 nd Quarter Essay Prompt  Discuss Nathaniel Hawthorne’s use of nature in The Scarlet Letter. How is his use of nature significant? Consider both aspects of nature and natural settings both. What do you make of these representations?  Tips to completing this essay:  You must use clear and specific examples from the novel to support your argument.  Cover the entire novel, rather than focus on one specific chapter.  Cite information when necessary.  You may use other resources besides the novel; however, you must cite all information appropriately. This is NOT required. You are only required to use the novel.

Essay Guidelines  Due Friday, December 14 th  3-4 pages (not including works cited)  Times New Roman / 12 pt. font / double-spaced  MLA format  Citing is required, despite the novel being the only source.  You must cite (in-text) all information that does not belong to you (including summarizing and paraphrasing). Use your MLA handout and Purdue Owl Online.  You must also create a works cited page (just to get used to the idea) where The Scarlet Letter will be the only source listed.

Organization  Essay musts: header (1 st page only), title, page numbers, works cited  Introduction with clear thesis statement.  Thesis must end intro and mention The Scarlet Letter, nature, and your overall argument regarding Hawthorne’s use of nature.  Body Paragraphs  Each paragraph needs a new and different main idea that supports your overall argument.  Find several different examples to support your argument, and create one body paragraph per example. Make sure each is supported and explained thoroughly.  Conclusion  Restate your thesis, main ideas, and wrap up the essay.  Works Cited  Remember, if you list it on the works cited, it must be cited in the text of your essay somewhere. And…vice versa.
