John 2:13-17 (ESV) The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen.
3
John 2:13-17 (ESV) And he poured out the coins of the money- changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
4
Key observations * First place Jesus is found - the temple! * His first act was to purify * Jesus is jealous of the House of the Lord, and His Glory * He addressed roots of sin, not just the evidence
5
Beware the zeal of the Lord * Malachi 3: 1-5 * Levites are today's "priests" - the believers * His refining fire has specific targets in the Church, and in me * He works inside-out: First the Church; then the culture
6
Application * Must know all of Jesus: Lamb and Warrior/ Merciful and Just * He deals with both temples: corporate and personal * With zeal He overthrows your enemies in this house-all that robs, distracts, keeps me from experiencing
7
Application (continued) * We prepare our own 'scourges' when we refuse (don't blame Him) * Marketplace is for capitalism; House of God is for worship * His purging is always redemptive: to make new wine
