(Joh 20:30) And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of Godand that believing ye might have life through his name (Joh 20:31) But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

(Joh 2:12-25) After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days. And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

A. His Base of operation

(Joh 2:12) After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

This city became the place of operation for his public ministry (other gospels refer to it as His city) The whole family except for Joseph is moving to this city at this time. There is good amount of historical record that would imply that they are move here to open a branch of the family construction business

We know that Mark 6:3 implies that he was a carpenters son. However that word carpenter can be translated stonemason. Which in many cases it would go hand and hand There is a lot of historical record that his family was the construction group that build the synagogue in Capernaum

"In the Gospels, Jesus is called a tekton, a Greek word that meant not merely a carpenter skilled in making cabinets or furniture but a designer, construction engineer, or architect. A tekton could build a house, construct a bridge, or design a temple." (Starbird, 2003, p. 53)

B. The Temple

Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple (Joh 2:13-15) And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

C. It is Passover time

passover was at hand (Joh 2:13-15) And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

During the Passover there would have been 200 to 300 thousand people coming in to Jerusalem to the Temple to participate in the practice. The temple had its own guard of 1,300 men. During the time of Passover there were an additional 6 to 8 thousand Roman foot soldiers brought in to keep peace

D. The extortion of the temple

those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple (Joh 2:13-15) And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

During the Passover there would have been venders set up all over the court of the gentiles to sell the animals to be sacrificed. Every male would have paid a tax of ½ a shekel that would had to be paid in Jewish currency (moneychangers) They even had Priest that stood at the interior gates with a tax to pass through

(Joh 2:16) And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up (Joh 2:17) And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's childrenFor the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up (Psa 69:8-9) I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

A. The chance to clear the air

(Joh 2:18) Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

(Mal 3:1-3) Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

B. Another embarrassing moment

Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up (Joh 2:19-22) Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

believed in commit himself (Joh 2:23-25) Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

(Rom 1:16) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (Luk 9:26) For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

(Rom 10:11) For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. (2Ti 1:12) For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
