{ Alexander Graham Bell The greatest inventor who ever lived?

One of the greatest inventions was created by this man, the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell is known world wide for the making of this machine but did it have a huge impact on our world? Who? Who?

Bell was born on the 3 rd of March, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. By the time he was 10, his mother was nearly deaf, his father, on the other hand; taught deaf people to speak. The young man played the piano, [ even though he thought he was rubbish], and was inspired by how it made sound. Sometimes, when he went on walks, he believed if he listened hard enough he could hear mother nature doing her thing. Interestingly, Alexander didn’t have Graham as his middle name his 11 th birthday ; he got it as a present because he wanted to have Graham in his name just like his two brothers. Because of his mother’s deafness, whenever guests came round he would tap on her arm to tell her what they were saying.

At 23, Bell and his family emigrated to Canada. There, he started inventing with his new assistant, Dr Thomas Watson. Very soon, he invented the metal detector and started work on a new invention, the telephone. Whenever he wasn’t inventing he was teaching deaf people just like his father. While he was living in Canada he married a deaf woman called Mabel Gardiner Hubbard. Soon after that, he had four children, Robert, Edward, Elsie and Marianne.

Professor Bell carried on working on the telephone for years on end. One day he was working on the telephone when he suddenly accidentally tipped some acid in himself but the miracle was; his scream went through the telephone and to Watson’s ears. It was ready to take to the patent office but at the same someone called Elisha Gray was going there too! The race was on! They both got there on the same day but Alexander received the patent!

In 1876, Bell started a company called, “Bell telephone company.” By 1886, 150,000 people had telephones in the USA. 29 years later the first transcontinental call was made from New York to San Francisco. The first words spoken on the telephone were to Dr Watson, “Mr Watson come here. I want to speak to you.”

Unfortunately,[in 1922] when he was 75, Bell died from diabetes but he is still remembered today. Thanks to Alexander Graham Bell, we can talk to people all around the world. Do you think the telephone was one of the greatest inventions ever made?
