Transition to Operations Ring-fencing. System is always being developed! Not quite the final version! Can you just change this?

Transition to Operations throwing it over the fence. Proved it works now its yours! Can’t stop that! We’re using it operationally!

Wind Profiler in Europe 1995-2000

Wind Profiler in Europe (1997) All in R&D Diverse systems Different applications Collaboration (COST76) Limited resources

© Crown copyright Met Office Demonstration Network (End to End process) Continuous, reliable operations of systems Data coding Using both GTS & FTP for data transfer Desktop Unix system for Hub (scripts and 24/7 operations) Quality Evaluation Reluctance from data users, poor quality data. Communication/Collaboration/Trial & Error

© Crown copyright Met Office Demonstration Network (Challenges) Software on systems to code and transmit automatically BUFR code was new Communications Dedicated Hub at Met Office Monitoring Data Availability & Timeliness Quality Evaluation: New concepts for hourly profile winds (Engaged with data users) CWINDE (Cost Wind Initiative Network Development in Europe)

Wind Profiler in Europe 2001 - 2012

© Crown copyright Met Office Operational Network (Transition to full operations) All systems encouraged to use standard configuration BUFR code meeting requirement of all NWP centres Standard method of communication CWINDE Hub with 24/7 support in IT Halls Quality Evaluation – external monitoring Performance targets on Availability, Timeliness & Quality Operational classification CWINDE (Co-ordinated WIND profiler network in Europe)

Operational Classification Classification. Green - Operational Yellow - Quality good but timeliness/support issues. Red - Data Quality poor

Wind Profiler in Europe 2013+ E-PROFILE

E-PROFILE (proposed) Continue with what we are doing Improved Quality System redundancy and ‘standard’ practices for Hub. Extended support to operators Exploit & promote additional capabilities of systems Updated BUFR message (consulted with users, additional metadata and uncertainty) Integrate ‘other’ systems into Hub (European ALC network) – subject to agreement of the business case. © Crown copyright Met Office

Summary (Authors View) Consider the End to End processes Applies to all systems, however big or small Early engagement with the user is highly recommended Resourcing and Timing is critical Ongoing process CWINDE has demonstrated that there can be a balance between Research and Operations BUT in the end we on the operational side of the fence are looking for routine, reliability and documented practices & change, to ensure we meet the User Requirements yet is affordable. © Crown copyright Met Office
