1 LEARNING DISABILITY AND END OF LIFE CARE A continuing challenge, a continuing journey The Pepperell Education Centre The Pepperell Education Centre, The Hall, Havering-atte-Bower, RM4 1QH Tel: 01708 758646 Fax: 01708 758641 education@sfh.org.uk Dates17 th February, 2011 Time09.30 – 16.30 hrs Target AudienceHealth and Social Care Professionals involved in supporting adults with learning disability. LD residence home care staff, health and social care professionals delivering end of life care, whether at home, in a residential care home setting or in hospital/hospice. Also open to families and friends involved in caring. InformationThrough experience of working with adults with Learning Disability (LD) who have developed serious, advanced incurable illness we have learnt much about the challenges of care for this vulnerable client group. We continue to learn from experience about the care needs and communication challenges, which make care that bit harder to get right. A small group of professionals working locally within the learning disability field and Saint Francis Hospice representatives now meet regularly to discuss experiences, challenges, and surmounting challenges. In 2009 we received the Linda McEnhill Award from the National Network for Palliative Care of People with Learning Difficulties for our work to improve care for this patient group. Linda will be speaking on the day and will be launching the “Routes to Success” publication on End of Life Care for people with Learning Disability. This day looks at learning about end of life care from the perspective of people with LD, and long term carers of people with LD. We will look at initiatives introduced into hospitals which have really improved care and identify continuing obstacles to ensure better care. Cost£75 per person, to include lunch and all course materials Special offer: Pay for one place get another place free!
