2 Kitchen Chemicals There are often many chemicals in a kitchen area, such as: Drain cleaners Bleaches Surface cleaners Degreasers Floor cleaners Chemicals can be harmful to your health and the environment – always use caution when working with any chemical! 2PPT-021-01

3 Chemical Safety NEVER MIX CHEMICALS TOGETHER! A violent reaction could occur causing injury/damage. Store flammable chemicals in cabinets designed for safe storage. If chemicals are stored in the kitchen, store on shelves below foodstuffs so that if they leak they will not contaminate food. Wear appropriate PPE when using chemicals. 3PPT-021-01

4 Types of PPE EYE PROTECTION SUCH AS SAFETY GOGGLES: HAND PROTECTION SUCH AS RUBBER GLOVES: RESPIRATORY PROTECTION : 4PPT-021-01

5 Chemical Safety Make sure chemicals are properly labeled and in proper containers. Read and follow warning labels. If available, review corresponding material safety data sheets, or MSDS, before working with chemicals. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations when mixing water with chemicals. 5PPT-021-01

6 Chemical Safety (cont.) Wash hands thoroughly after using any chemicals. Ensure lids are placed back on chemical containers when you’re done using them. Dispose of used chemical containers safely (follow your facility’s procedures). Do not store pesticides and other chemicals together. 6PPT-021-01

7 Chemical Safety (cont.) Clean up spills immediately and dispose of clean up materials properly. Ensure areas are well ventilated when using chemicals. If you feel sick while using a chemical, get to fresh air and have your supervisor notified as soon as possible. Report any injuries or physical reactions you may have when using chemicals immediately. 7PPT-021-01

8 Review Never mix chemicals! Read warning labels and MSDSs. Wear appropriate PPE. Ensure chemicals are properly labeled. Store chemicals safely. Clean up spills immediately. Notify your supervisor if injured. 8PPT-021-01

9 Remember! Use common sense and good safety practices when working with chemicals! Never become complacent when working with any chemical. Chemicals have the potential to harm you and the environment. Be careful, be safe, be happy! 9PPT-021-01
