1 Net Review Opening Routine The net at the right folds into the cube shown beside it. Which letters will be on the top and front of the cube if A is folded to the back? Show all work for credit! E becomes the top and C becomes the front.

2 INTRODUCTION Objective: To recognize polyhedra and their parts. To visualize cross sections of space figures. To find the surface area of prisms and cylinders. Essential Question: How do you find the surface area of any prism and cylinder?

3 A polyhedron is a space figure, or three dimensional figure, whose surfaces are polygons. Each polygon is a face of the polyhedron. An edge is a segment that is formed by the intersection of two faces. A vertex is a point where three or more edges intersect. Euler’s Formula (3-D): The sum of the number of faces (F) and vertices (V) of a polyhedron is two more than the number of its edges (E). F + V = E + 2 Euler’s Formula (2-D): (F) is the number of regions formed by the vertices (V) linked by (E) segments F + V = E + 1 A cross section is the intersection of a solid and a plane. (Very thin slice of solid.

4 A prism is a polyhedron with two congruent, parallel faces, called bases. The other faces are lateral faces. You name a prism using the shape of its bases. An altitude of a prism is a perpendicular segment that joins the planes of the bases. The height h of a prism is the length of an altitude. The lateral area (L.A.) of a prism is the sum of the areas of the lateral faces. The surface area (S.A.) is the sum of the lateral area and the area of the two bases.
