Back NumberStatementsT / F 1 Native English speakers see numbers in a different way from native Chinese speakers. 2 Native English speakers engaged a part of the brain involved in quantity representation and reading, but native Chinese speakers did not. 3 English speakers used a brain region involved in the processing of visual information while Chinese speakers showed activity in a language-processing area of the brain. 4 These two kinds of people’s difference in doing math lies in the fact that they use different languages. 5 Different cultural factors partly result in their different ways of doing math. 5 UNIT SEVEN Scripts: Back M : Mary, what language do you speak besides English? W : A little Chinese. I learned it when I was in college. M : You know, people who speak English and those who speak Chinese have a different way of seeing numbers. W : Really? I have never heard of that. M : A study found that native English speakers do math differently than those whose first language is Chinese. W : What’s the difference? M : These two kinds of people use different parts of the brain. Researchers used brain imaging to see which parts of the brain were active while people did simple addition problems using Arabic numerals. W : What was the result? M : Both group engaged a part of the brain involved in quantity representation and reading. But native English speakers also showed activity in a language-processing. area of the brain, while native Chinese speakers used a brain region involved in the processing of visual information. W : What causes that? M : Researchers aren’t sure why. They say cultural factors may play a part, such as math learning strategies and school training.

UNIT SEVEN Scripts: Back John Wang, a Chinese businessman, is naturally fond of Chinese food. His favorite dish is fried rice. Unfortunately, there isn’t any Chinese restaurant in his neighborhood. But there is a Greek restaurant nearby, and it so happens one of the feature courses there is fried rice. John Wang is a regular customer of the restaurant. But as a businessman, he is poor in his English pronunciation. He calls fried rice “flied lice”. Sam Agnew, the owner of the restaurant, got mad one day and told John Wang, “Your English pronunciation is terrible. My customers become nauseous and stay away from my place. Go out and learn how to pronounce ‘fried rice’ correctly, or don’t come back!” John Wang became angry too, and for three months he didn’t come anywhere near the Greek restaurant. Finally he couldn’t hold out any longer, because he wanted to have Chinese food very much. He learned from his neighbor Jim to pronounce fried rice perfectly. Then he walked straight to the Greek restaurant and said to Sam Agnew: “Give me some fried rice, you ‘crazy Gleek’!”

UNIT SEVEN Scripts: Back I didn’t know the city at all and what’s more, I couldn’t speak a word of the language. Now I wanted to go back to my hotel. I determined to ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I pronounced badly. I stopped to ask a newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he thrusted the paper into my hands. The next person I asked was an old lady who was selling vegetables. She was very hard of hearing and I repeated the word several times. When she finally heard me, she seemed to take offence and began shouting and shaking her walking stick at me. I hurried away quickly and was relieved to see a policeman on a corner. The policeman listened to my question, smiled and gently took me by the arm. There was distant look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed. About an hour passed and I noticed the houses were getting fewer and green fields were appearing on either side of me. I had come all the way into the country. The only thing left for me to do was to find the nearest railway station.

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Text A Back Someday Everything Will Be Acronyms 1 Actually, CIA, FBI, AOL, NBA... and the like are more than just abbreviations. Many Stock Exchange symbols have three letters as well. 2 As time will pass, in writing, words will no longer be commonly used. Only their first letters will be welcome and appreciated. 3 As many people know, acronyms play a more important role in the present world. They are now used not only to shorten long names or titles, but to convey entire sentences. That last thing is most commonly encountered in text messaging. 4 Use of acronyms in such forms of dialogue sure has its advantages. It’s fast and easy, saving a fair bit of time. For those who don’t have much time to spare, that would definitely be nice. Same goes for those who don’t feel motivated enough to create full sentences. Another thing some people might take as an advantage is the way the first letters of the words can disguise the meaning that the sentence contains. Not everybody knows the meaning behind acronyms, even if one is familiar with that type of thing. It’s more difficult to figure out a bunch of words by looking at their first letters if you are not an official participant of the conversation. It’s fairly obvious what would be the downside of that.

UNIT SEVEN Chinese version 1. Back

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back 5 Although it is a fast and effective way to communicate through text messaging, I don’t see how acronyms would improve anyone’s verbal and vocabulary skills. Personal manner of speech is all a matter of choice, but isn’t it better to be articulate than have trouble coming up with things to say when one needs to talk out loud? There is already a problem with a decreasing variety in vocabulary and speech among the general public. Fewer of the different words and synonyms are used, while the people choosing to insert some “long” words into their speech are often frowned upon for no good reason. If making acronyms a part of your life won’t worsen your terms with your daily speech, it certainly won’t bring any improvements. Text A Back

UNIT SEVEN Chinese version 5. Back

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Text A Back 6 Most people who communicate over the Internet are familiar with acronym meanings, but some report not knowing what they mean. It would be unfair if those who don’t want to learn acronyms, or have trouble retaining them in their head, were excluded from various forms of online communication. Fortunately, many online communities favour typing out the entire sentence in all posts, and there are quite a few people who would rather do that in independent forms of text messaging. 7 With the circumstances now being as they are, it doesn’t seem realistic to beat the spreading of the acronyms. Given the advantages, that’s not even necessary. Whatever happens would have to be the choice of many other people, besides myself.

UNIT SEVEN Chinese version 6. Back

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Text B Back Languages and the Internship Rush 1 My father once told me,“Jean, I think you will need to know at least five languages. All the top lawyers I know can speak at least five languages.”I was about seventeen when my father gave me this advice, and I thought my father was exaggerating and didn’t pay much heed to his advice at the time. I told him,“Daddy, nobody I know speaks that many languages! It’s impossible!” 2 I am currently in my second semester of law school and I am frantically applying to summer internships with my peers. I want to work in the field of international law and have been applying to organizations like the United Nations and the International Criminal Court. Whether they state it explicitly on their applications or not, fluency in a second language other than English is a standard requirement. If you do not speak another language other than English, you can forget about a U.N. internship.

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Chinese version 1. Back

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Text B Back 3 I was recently offered a job with a Boston organization that works with nationals of developing countries in drafting legislation. While the woman who interviewed me told me she was impressed with my resume generally, she was particularly impressed that I was fluent in Chinese. She offered me the job immediately after finishing our telephone interview. Another job that I applied for was for a German government organization in Beijing. While I missed the deadline for this year, I received an email offering me an internship position for the following summer. I do not believe that anything on my resume represented me as being particularly qualified for the position—anything other than the fact that I had studied German in Munich and had studied Chinese at Tshinghua University. 4 Even for regular law firm jobs, employers are increasingly looking for individuals that speak several different languages. As business becomes increasingly global, any lawyer or businessperson that is fluent in several languages is considered an asset. Growing up in the United States, I never realized that languages were so important. I used to think that my parents were unique in the fact that they stressed learning languages while I was growing up.

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Chinese version 3. Back

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Text B Back 5 As I’ve gotten older, my friends have changed and almost everyone I know these days is fluent in at least two languages. I now realize that five languages doesn’t seem so“impossible” and my dad was right after all. 6 I speak English, German, and Chinese. My French, which I took in high school, is mediocre. When traveling in France, I can find my way around and order things at restaurants, but am nowhere near fluent. I want to continue improving my German language skills and additionally learn another language in the next year. My father said speaking three or four European languages in addition to two or three Asian languages would be ideal. As I have learned with my internship applications this year, oftentimes, it will be a candidate’s language skills that will set himself or herself apart from the pack, and languages will oftentimes be the thing that gets your foot in the door.

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Chinese version 5. Back

UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Writing Back Sample To: Mr. Beamer From: Jack Rolly Date: December 23, 2012 Subject: Students’Study of English Dear Mr. Beamer, You asked me to submit a report about students’study of English in our college. I made a survey and collected information from the Students’Union, from some homeroom teachers and from interviews with a number of freshmen and sophomores. Generally, the majority of the students are interested in English learning. They hold that English is an important communication tool and is quite useful to their future careers. They have great determination to learn it well. But there are those who think they learn English only for the Pretco and CET-4, that is, only for a certificate. Still others are tired of English learning. They mentioned two reasons. One is that they are forced to learn it, that they don’t like English and if they fail to pass English exams, they will not be awarded their diplomas. The other reason is that some English teachers are not lively enough when teaching their classes. Their boring teaching methods can’t arouse students’ interest. It is advisable to hire qualified teachers. Let veteran and experienced teachers be their mentors. College supervisors should often go to their classes to observe and to provide guidance. As for students, teachers should be more strict with them and give them more chances to practice English, help them to learn a good work ethic and to give more encouragement. What’s more, colorful activities in English learning should be used in teaching. Sincerely yours, Jack Rolly Dean of English Department
