Roosevelt Served 4 Terms as President –1933-1945 Suffered from Polio –Used leg braces to stand –Press respected his disability (Didn’t exploit) “Fire Side Chats” –Informal talks with American public through Radio –Public felt as if the President was talking to them directly Alphabet Agencies –New Deal programs created to combat the Great Depression

The First 100 Days Federal Securities Act –SEC (Securities & Exchange Commission) = Regulates stock market –FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp) = Protected civilians bank deposits CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) –Targeted 18-25 year olds –Built roads, parks, planted trees –Lived in camps (Food, shelter supplied by Govt.)

The Second 100 Days Farmers need help –Govt. regulates crop production –Provided affordable electricity (Tennessee Valley Authority) WPA (Works Progress Administration) –Create jobs quickly & rapidly –Ranged from Construction work to Artists Social Security Act (1935) –Old age insurance (65+) –Unemployment compensation system –Aid to dependent children & the disabled

Results of the New Deal Unemployment drops from 25% in 1933 to 13% in 1940 Exports increase from $1.7 billion in 1931 to $4 billion in 1940 GNP = Gross National Product –Total $ value of goods bought & sold –GNP increased from $68 in 1933 to $113 in 1940
