6  Germans don't usually feel comfortable discussing especially serious things “on the go” PLAN!  Make appointments well in advance. (not through telephone)  If you are late for any reason, you must call and notify.  Preferred business times are between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. or between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Avoid scheduling on Friday afternoons, most businesses are closed then.  Casually changing appointed times are not appreciated.

7  Tend to dress in more appropriate, muted colored clothing.  A simple jacket/blazer would be inappropriate.  Wear Dress shoes, no vans, nike, ect.  Women should avoid excessive jewlery.

10  Do not assume Germans speak English.  Firm brief handshake is proper for first arrival.  Kisses on cheeks are common only along close friends.  German drivers do not always stop for pedestrians.

11  Small gifts are polite  Avoid giving substantial gifts in private.  Gifts are meant as “Thank you”  When returning home remember to write a thank you card.  Good gifts: quality pens, office accessories, or imported liquor.

12  Bring Plenty of Business cards.  Be cautious with new ideas.  Detailed planning is valued.  Germans are less impressed with glitzy advertising, but more on the matter at hand.  German have no problems saying “no”.

13  Dinner is more appropriate for business meetings.  Wait for them to initiate business talk.  The person who offers the meeting usually pays at end of the meal.  Germans do not often entertain business associates in their home.

14  Königsberger Klopse An East Prussian (now Poland) specialty, these meatballs in white sauce are flavored with capers and lemon juice and served with potatoes and pickled beets.
