Feeding Troy Through Sustainable Distribution Providing Food to Troy’s Hungry

The problem - 1.3 billion tonnes of food are being wasted in the U.S. every year, one third of the annual U.S. production. This is near 6.3 million barrels of wasted oil. - College campuses as a group throw away 22 million pounds of food each year. - 12,000 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef… you can imagine this scaled up to a global scale. - One in six people face hunger.

Our goal is to create a food efficient Troy, and to sustainably provide food to the hungry.

We propose to provide food for homeless citizens of Troy by taking leftover food from around the city and surrounding colleges and bringing it to a soup kitchen. There, the food will be available for anyone who is hungry or in need of food. Ideally, this soup kitchen will be in the Troy Atrium during weekdays, leaving the atrium open and available for the Farmer’s Market on the weekends.

Barriers and Solutions to Success Barriers -Transportation of food from donation site to main site -Filtering out unconsumable foods while complying with FDA food regulation standards -Getting the word out to the homeless people as well as potential donors Solutions -Transportation -utilize CDTA and volunteer drivers -bikers for summer operations -Regulation -at the home station, we will have regulators to check and assess the food for edibility -Advertising -on our coolers, we can have a little advertisement for our project -decals on cars

Stakeholders -Local Colleges (RPI, SAGE, UNION COLLEGE) -Volunteers -City of Troy Government -Residents of Troy -Restaurant Donors -Private Donors -The hungry people of Troy

Resources Needed -Food Donations -Transportation -Plates/utensils that we can either wash, recycle, or that are biodegradable -Cleaning station for plates/utensils -Volunteers to prepare and distribute food, and clean up the area afterwards.

The Outcome -11 trillion gallons of water will be saved by not wasting food -The hungry people of Troy will no longer be in such food insecurity -There will be indirect conservation of energy and lowered greenhouse gas emissions (ex. methane) -Reduced landfill volume

Positive scenario Step 1 Collect Food Donations: Contact vendors, and negotiate food donations, which will be collected from Dining Halls and local restaurants throughout the day. Step 2 Sort and Prepare Food and Distribution Facility: Preparation of meals for the evening will start. Restaurant food and other pre-prepared foods will be available throughout the day. Step 3 Distribute Food Reducing the magnitude of waste created by wasting food, and feeding people in food-insecurity; plus there will be a reduction in greenhouse emissions.

Evaluation Guidelines 1 Year Project is in operation, food is being collected and distributed. 1.5 years Food distribution is near or over 50kg of food a day, effectively providing for Troy’s homeless. 2 Years Food distribution will increase, more serving locations will exist. n + 2 years Streamlining System, Other city/area has adopted system.
