Statistics show that students are more inclined to matriculate in 4 years when they are taking their college level math course in their first semester. At NSC we strategically block students in 12- 15 credits where they take math in their first semester Over 60% of our incoming students place into remedial level (Foundational Math). In order to improve student success, our course is now uniquely designed to allow students to get the content they need in one semester, rather than spread out in three separate classes. (Math 93, 95, 96 are now Math 95M) For More Information: To find out more about the Foundational Math Program or Academic Advising with Nevada State College, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Research shows that students who place into these courses do not matriculate at a high percentage. To combat these issues, Nevada State assigns an academic advisor specifically for students who are enrolled in these courses. This advisor has the following duties: Heavily involved in the student's first year experience Creating Academic Plans for the student that includes the Foundational Math Program in its entirety Create intervention plans with remedial math students to address academic needs and risk factors. Since the implementation of this Foundational (Remedial) Math Advisor, the completion rate and enrollment into a Gateway math course has continuously increased. Complete College America Reports that at 4-year institutions, 35.1% of remedial students graduate within six years compared to 55.7% of non- remedial students. Our Results Foundational Math Program : Fall 2012 - 2014 Foundational Math Program – At a Glance Based on the findings of the Remedial Placement & Enrollment Report for the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Foundational Math program has changed. Instead of three courses, students only take one course and then move on to their College Level Math with a Friday recitation, specifically designed to help those students be successful in their enrolled math course. Foundational Math Program : Fall 2015
