Open Access at the RSC

What is the RSC’s view? “RSC supports Open Access models which seek to ensure that scholarly publishing activities operate in a long term sustainable way” Maximise availability and accessibility of research Maintain standards and ethics of publishing Provide a quality service Gold OA is the best option – sustainable and provides immediate access Green OA – we can facilitate this via our Chemical Science Article Repository and our policies allow deposition into institutional repositories (12-month embargo period)

RSC’s Open Access policies We provide Gold OA options in all our journals –APCs: £1,000 (Communication, Technical Note); £1,600 (Full Paper); £2,500 (Review Article) –Choice of CC BY and CC BY NC license 1 gold OA Journal Chemical Science Deposition of authors’ final accepted version in an institutional repository is permissible with full text of article available 12 months after publication Article metadata can be deposited in a non-commercial repository at any time after publication Green route via deposition in our Chemical Sciences Article Repository - automatic deposition of the authors’ final version if this is opted into at submission (12 month embargo period)

We reward all RSC Gold subscribing institutions with voucher codes to publish Gold OA free of charge Subscription Price / £ 1,600 GBP = Number of Open Access Vouchers

620 Institutions qualified for Gold for Gold 2617 articles went OA from 341 institutions in 39 different countries Results in 2014

Where is it happening?

Global distribution of OA % of OA RSC articles published by country in 2014

Country Number of OA Articles % of total OA Articles Germany77730% United Kingdom47519% United States1598% Australia1305% Japan1074% Netherlands924% Switzerland703% Sweden703% Italy673% Poland642% Top ten countries publishing OA articles in 2014

Publishing Institutions in Slovenia National Institute of Chemistry University of Ljubljana Institut Jozef Stefan University of Maribor University of Nova Gorica Institute of Metals and Technology Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute

Input from Slovenia in 2015 39 accepted RSC articles 94 authors published as co-author or corresponding author 17 OA Vouchers used ( 15 still available )

Publishing Institutions in Croatia Ruđer Bošković Institute University of Zagreb University of Split Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek The Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health

Input from Croatia in 2015 37 accepted RSC articles 97 authors published as co-author or corresponding author 15 Open Access Vouchers used ( 0 left)

Benefits of Gold for Gold Authors Easy solution to increasing pressure to publish OA Get more visibility for their research No need to deal with payments of OA articles Librarians Great for relations with faculty Become more actively involved with OA A chance to experiment with this model Institution Profile is raised

How do we continue Understand the needs and requirements of stakeholders relating to open access Provide a trusted voice and source of information for the chemical sciences community during the transition to open access Provide a publishing system, process and reporting solutions which meet & exceed needs of our users Ensure every author has the option to publish open access in compliance with their funding requirements Be a sustainable publishing partner
