 Lecture 1-1 Autumn in Colorado

 A biologist:  Poses and answers questions about the natural world.  Studies the interactions of living things and the environment.  Studies organisms from a cell to the biosphere.

Polio vaccinations: Pakistan  Other concerns of biologists:  Pollution  Disease prevention and cures  Improving our food supply Children with polio

What are the characteristics of living things?

 Living things are all made from cells. Cells can form tissues. Tissues build organs. Groups of organs build organ systems. All together  organism.

 Living things respond to their external and internal environments.  Light changes  Hunger  Pain  Threat  Survival

 Organisms have regulatory systems that keep their ‘insides’ from changing.  Ex: sweating  Shivering  Wilting (plants) Feliz Sudor

 Living things all use energy to carry out their life processes. Plants get energy from ? Herbivores? Carnivores? Omnivores?

 Life increases in size  Growth happens when cells divide  Development is change as the organism matures.

 Since all things die, reproduction carries life into the next generation.  DNA carries genetic information from one generation to the next.

Plant evolution Horse evolution
