Cool Tools Dress Code

Dress for Success Many times in life situations a person is judged upon how well dressed they appear. The same holds true for students, whether in the classroom setting, during an IB interview, or for a special event such as Fine Arts Night. Students should dress for success every day of the week unless the school allows you to dress casually on a given day. – Many days throughout the school year, a student is allowed to dress casually if there is a picture day or scheduled event during the school day. Failure to dress appropriately can impact the way an administrator, teachers, other students and guests perceive the student in question.

Dressing for success has three main effects for students: 1.Maintain respect 2.Establish credibility 3.Establish yourself as a respectful person

Respect Dressing for success and following the established dress code policy will help you obtain the respect and credibility necessary from students and teachers. Other students will tend to model the behavior and appearance they see around the classroom. Your respect in the classroom begins with your appearance and you should strive to be a positive role model for each other. In addition, students must dress professionally for special events to gain the respect of parents and guests at the event. If a student chooses to disobey the dress code policy, guests may lose respect and admiration for the student in question.

Student Uniform Policy Student uniform policy is outlined in the Student Handbook section of the Student Planner and is set by the district. Our school colors are royal blue and gold, thus can be worn as part of our school’s shirt color scheme

Uniform Shirts Must be one of 4 required colors: Royal Blue, Navy, White, Yellow (or Gold) -- NO LIGHT BLUE Must have a collar Any logo must be small and not distract from the uniform (less than 1/2 inch EXCEPT Spiritwear) Spiritwear may be worn Fridays if they are the required colors Absolutely no sleeveless shirts Sweatshirts and sweaters must be plain and uniform color, with no hoods and must have a uniform shirt underneath

Uniform Pants/Shorts/Skirts Must be khaki(tan), navy blue or black Sweats and denim or denim-look are not allowed -- NO JEANS Shorts are allowed during hot weather Shorts and skirts must not be shorter than the fingertips when the student puts his/her arms straight down by his/her sides Tights and leggings may only be khaki, navy blue, or black - no sparkles, designs, patterns, etc. Tight pants are not appropriate at school- no jeggings, skinny pants or yoga pants Belts should be worn with pants that have loops

Other Items No flip-flops or bedroom slippers Gym shoes are mandatory for PE and should have non- marking soles No hoods, even on Spiritwear, may be worn Tights or leggings may be worn under shorts or skirts and must be the same colors as pants/skirts/shorts. Generally, if you must do anything "special" to your clothes to make them conform to these standards, you will be asked to change clothes – eg. pull skirt down, fold shorts down at the bottom, hide hood inside shirt No hats or bandanas

At times when regular clothes are worn on campus, dress code standards set by the district are still applicable – No sleeveless, spaghetti straps, low-cut, belly or cut-off shirts – Pants are not to be worn "low" (below the hips) or very tight – Shorts and skirts must not be shorter than the fingertips, as stated above – No hoods This is not an exhaustive list, therefore just because you don't see it here doesn't mean it is okay to wear. Good judgement should be used.

Interviews Students should try to dress conservatively during an IB interview. Dressing for success during an interview will allow the interviewer to focus on the wonderful attributes and skills the applicant can bring to the school, rather than the appearance or dress of the individual. Dressing for success is also crucial during a job interview since first impressions are key to help the individual obtain a position.

Interview Attire Dress for success – Men: Suit should be navy or gray – conservative style with a white shirt and tie Dress slacks, not jeans - business shirt and tie Dress shirts should always be tucked in Hair should be clean and well- groomed, including any facial hair Dress shoes – no athletic shoes All belts should be worn appropriately Cologne should be used very sparingly Dress for success – Women: Dresses – tights should be worn if the dress does not fall below the knee Nice slacks or skirts Midriff tops should not be worn Low-cut tops should not be worn Skirts – length must fall no higher than the top of the knee Choose neutral-toned tights Shoes should be closed-toe flats or low heels– also, no athletic shoes Make-up should be subtle Hair should be clean and well- groomed Perfume should be used very sparingly
