3 Requirements for Practice/ Competition PRACTICE: Enrolled in full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree. COMPETITION: Enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester or quarter hours, regardless of institution’s definition of full-time enrollment. NCAA Division I Bylaws 14.1.8.1 and 14.1.8.2

4 Eligibility for Competition -- Exceptions Several exceptions listed in Bylaw 14.1.8.2.1. Final semester/quarter. – Enrolled in courses necessary to complete degree requirements. Competition while enrolled in graduate program. – Enrolled in a full-time graduate program as defined by institution. Bylaws 14.1.8.2.1.3 and 14.1.8.2.1.4

5 Good Academic Standing Determined by the institution for all students. Use the more strict of the rules: – NCAA, conference and institutional. Bylaws 14.01.2 and 14.01.2.1

6 Eligibility for Competition Progress-toward-degree requirements. Designed to move student-athletes (SA) toward graduation within five years of full-time collegiate enrollment. Ensures SAs are functioning as students during each academic year. Exceptions and waivers are available. Bylaw 14.4.3

7 Progress Toward Degree Academic year credit-hour requirements. Six-hour requirement each term. 18-hour requirement each academic year. Progress-toward-graduation benchmarks. 24-hour requirement. Percentage-of-degree requirements. (40%/60%/80%) Grade-point average (GPA) requirements. (90%/95%/100%)

8 Six-Hour Requirement Must complete a minimum of six-semester or six-quarter hours of academic credit in the previous full time regular academic term. – Does not apply to part-time terms. Bylaws 14.4.3.1–(d)

9 24-Hour Requirement – End of First Year Must complete a 24-semester of academic credit before the start of the student-athlete’s second year of collegiate enrollment. Credits can be applicable to any degree. Credits from summer prior to and summer after first year of collegiate enrollment may be included. Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(a)

10 18-Hour Requirement – Every Year Must earn 18-semester hours of academic credit during each regular academic year. – Cannot use summer hours to meet 18 credits. – Winter term hours during the academic year DO count. Certified before start of the institution's third semester or fourth quarter following the SA's initial full-time enrollment. Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(b)

11 Degree Credit Must designate degree program by beginning of third year of collegiate enrollment (fifth semester or seventh quarter). At the start of the third year of enrollment, all credits used to satisfy progress-toward-degree requirements (i.e., six- hour rule, 18/27) must count toward designated degree. Bylaw 14.4.3.1.5

12 Progress Toward Graduation 6/18/24-hour requirement. Must complete the following percentage-of-degree requirements: – Before start of third year -- 40%. – Before start of fourth year -- 60%. – Before start of fifth year -- 80%. Based on SA’s full time terms of enrollment. Bylaw 14.4.3.2

13 Percentage-of-Degree Calculation Hours earned applicable to designated degree Hours required for graduation based on designated degree = % of degree

14 Grade-Point-Average Requirements Must meet GPA benchmarks before the start of each regular academic term. – Before the start of second year -- 90%. – Before the start of third year -- 95%. – Start of fourth year and beyond -- 100%. GPA requirement based on minimum GPA required for graduation. Bylaw 14.4.3.3.1

19 Faculty Athletics Representative The Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) is appointed from the faculty by the President of the University for a five-year term. The FAR chairs the University Athletics Council, and with the assistance of the Council, advises the President on policies of the intercollegiate athletics program. The FAR is the voting representative of the campus to the ACC and the NCAA. The full duties of the FAR and the role of the University Athletics Council can be found on the Council’s website at: www.inform.umd.edu/CampusInfo/Senate/Membership/athleticfyi.html The current FAR is Dr. Charles Wellford and he can be reached at 301-405- 4701 or by email at cwellford@crim.umd.edu.

20 Faculty Athletics Representative At Maryland – Dr. Charles Wellford thru June 2011 – also Chair of the Athletics Council. In July 2011, Dr. Nick Hadley will assume this role. FAR – Liaison to the President and Campus – provides oversight and advice in the administration of the Athletics Department

21 FAR, cont. Athletics Council Chair – reports to the President A/C/E subcommittee member – works closely on Eligibility policy matters Grade Change – reviews all Grade Changes when it alters a S-A’s eligibility status – simply ensures proper protocol was followed

22 Contact by Coach Athletic Council Policy SECTION XVII. COACHES CONTACTS WITH FACULTY All contacts of coaches with faculty and other instructional personnel about the academic performance of a student-athlete should be done through the relevant counselor in the Academic Support and Career Development Unit (ASCDU) or with the assistance of the Faculty Athletics Representative. This policy should not be interpreted to suggest that all contact with faculty by coaches need follow this policy. For example, coaches may serve on campus committees, have friendships with faculty members, etc. The policy refers to those contacts that relate to the academic performance of a specific student athlete in a class taught by the faculty member.
