How it all began: EU Project CARMEN Network operators Equipment manufacturers Academia / research institutes

Goals of CARMEN Enable heterogeneous (multi-hop) wireless backhaul networks including mesh topologies for operator deployments Media independence layer (code once, run everywhere)  Define media abstraction layer for higher-layer services  Provide additional information to higher layers for things like neighborhood information and radio configuration

Initial Objective

Why IEEE 802.21? It offers a media independent interface (MIH_SAP) already Many of the primitives defined in 802.21 for handovers can actually be reused for network management/cross-layer information exchange It offers the required communication mechanisms (e.g. to propagate link state updates to a central mgmt. entity) Obviously, there are still points missing to enable wireless network management and some new primitives would be needed

General Areas of Interest Getting/Setting interface capabilities (local or remote) Media independent capacity definition Monitoring Capacity constrained HO  focus on Media Independent Radio Configuration

Selected Contributions Presentation to SG – K. Grochla, W. Buga (Proximetry) Practical experiences with media-independent link control – D. Liu (China Mobile) Wireless Mesh Trial Network Introduction – S. Das (Telcordia) Use of MIH for ad hoc networks – Y. Ohba (Toshiba) Network management use cases – I-Kang Fu, MediaTek Multi-Radio Integration for Heterogeneous Networks

Contributions to other groups Presentation of SG to the groups – Presentation to the 802.21/802.19 joint session A. de la Oliva (UC3M), J. Lessmann (NEC), C. Niephaus (FhG) IEEE 802.19.1 as a Media Independence Service Layer – Presentation of SG overview to 802.16 NetMan – Participation of the SG in 802.16x CFI tutorial – Presentation of SG overview to 802.11 WNG

Conclusion Study Group was established in November 2009 SG has been extended twice Considerable number of contributions Unfortunately, the level of initiative of companies (even within 802.21 WG) is not high enough to feel comfortable with making a PAR Hence, this is the last SG session 10
