29.4 Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 45 Topic: 30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Essential Question(s): 1.Explain how diffusion allows gases to move into and out of the alveoli of the lungs. 2.In what ways can respiratory diseases reduce the level of O 2 in the blood? 2.1 Atoms, Ions, and Molecules 30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange KEY CONCEPT The respiratory system exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide.

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange KEY CONCEPT The respiratory system exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide.

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Gas Exchange: Blow it Up!!!! Mini Lab P.44 TABLE A Gender (M/F) Vital Capacity Girth (cm) Resting Respiratory Rate (breaths/min) Elevated Respiratory Rate (breaths/min) Do you play sports? (Y/N)

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Gas Exchange- Blow it Up! 1.Loosen up your balloon (blow it up/stretch it out) DON’T MAKE IT POP! 2.Sit down. Take deep breaths in and out about five times 3.Hold a balloon to your mouth, taking care to keep the opening sealed tightly, and blow all the air out of your lungs. DO NOT TAKE ANOTHER BREATH! 4.Take the balloon out of your mouth, keeping the opening shut 5.Have your partner measure the girth of the balloon using string. Use a ruler to measure the string in cm

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Gas Exchange- Blow it Up! 6. Record in Table A as the Vital Capacity Girth 7. Breathe in and out normally. Have your partner count the number of breaths you take in 30 seconds. (1 breath= breathing in and then out) 8. Double this number to obtain the breaths taken in one minute and record on TABLE A as the Resting Respiratory Rate 9.With your partner timing you, run in place for one minute 10.Sit down, and have your elevated repiratory rate measured for 30 seconds 11.Double this # and record on TABLE A as the elevated respiratory rate

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Was there a difference between: - Boys and girls? - People who played sports and people who didn’t?

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried by the blood to and from the alveoli. –Gases move by diffusion- higher concentration to lower concentration

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Breathing is regulated by the brain stem. pons medulla oblongata The medulla oblonga sends messages through the nervous and endocrine systems that stimulate the diaphragm and rib cage muscles to work harder.

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Respiratory diseases interfere with gas exchange. Lung diseases reduce airflow and oxygen absorption. –Emphysema destroys alveoli. -Shortness of breath –Asthma constricts airways –Bronchitis inflammation of the mucus membranes of the bronchus –Cystic fibrosis produces sticky mucus

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange The Common Cold and Asthma (1m)

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Smoking is the leading cause of lung diseases.

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange

Air Pollution and Respiration (1m25s)

30.2 Respiration and Gas Exchange Respiratory Diseases Articles and Informational Poster In groups of 3, choose one of the respiratory diseases –Emphysema –Asthma –Bronchitis –Cystic Fibrosis Read the informational article (DO NOT WRITE ON THEM) Make an informational poster educating us on your disease –What is your disease and how does it affect your respiratory system? –Causes?/Symptoms?/Treatments? –Risk factors?/ Who is most at risk? –Short/long term effects of the disease?
