Lincolnshire and Rutland Public Service Compact “Using new technologies to deliver Leadership and Management Programmes” The role of social networking media in training Chris Donkin (Facilitator of the Lincolnshire and Rutland Public Service Compact)

Social Networking Media Facebook – normal usage and use in training Twitter – normal usage and use in training YouTube – normal usage and use in training A social network service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relationships among people, who share interests and/or activities. The big two are facebook and twitter and of course there is also YouTube which ‘behaves’ like a social networking site in many respects … so – up next …

Facebook – normal usage Facebook is a social networking website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc., with more than 500 million active users in July 2010, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world. Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. www.facebook.com

Facebook – L&M Training Usage Facebook is used by student groups as ‘study groups’.. Particularly useful on a part-time course - e.g. a L&M class run over a number of evenings … the platform can also be used by the tutor and/or course manager to part deliver a course www.facebook.com

Twitter– normal usage Twitter is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other author tweets - this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers. As of late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of just following individual authors. www.twitter.com

Twitter – L&M Training Usage Twitter can be used by tutors to give up to date information relating to course delivery. Given the nature of the platform examples of twitter being used in managing and/or delivering a course are rare.

YouTube – normal usage YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. Three former PayPal employees created YouTube in February 2005. Unregistered users can watch the videos, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos. Videos that are considered to contain potentially offensive content are available only to registered users 18 and older. In November 2006, YouTube, LLC was bought by Google Inc. for $1.65 billion, and now operates as a subsidiary of Google. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWm7p62Se9A

YouTube – L&M Training Usage YouTube can be (and is) used in course delivery. Check out this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNDXXbrHnkY&feature=related In many ways it behaves like a social networking site as it enables comments (and hence encourages discussion) and feedback is sent to the ‘poster’. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG_8OgARyfA
