2. All About Naples!!!!!  Being a waterfront city, Naples is a spectacular vacation area in southern Italy. It is the capital of the region of Campania. This area has sweet Mediterranean weather all year long!! The Bay of Naples is also an important shipping port. This city has been a cultural city since the Renaissance.

3. History- From the Very Beginning!  6 th Century BC- Naples was founded by Greeks. Naples was first named Parthenope, but later changed to Neapolis. After the Greeks, the Romans came into power.  Naples was captured by many countries including the Ostrogoths, Byzantine, and Totila.  Starting in 661, Naples was ruled by Duchy of Naples.  In 1137, Naples became a part of the Kingdom of Sicily.  Naples converted to French rule in 1501, but Spain quickly gained control in 1503.  Naples and Sicily became the Two Sicilies in 1815.  In 1861, Naples changed to be a part of the Kingdom of Italy, which later became the country of Italy we know of today.

4. Politics, Politics and More Politics!!!!  Luigi de Magistris is the mayor of Naples. He represents the Italy of Values political party. He was voted in the 2011 elections and supported by the Communist Refoundation party.  Naples has a high level of political corruption and organized crime which also effect the city’s economy.

5. Where is Naples??  Naples is located in the region of Campania in Southern Italy. The city of Pompeii is near Naples. This city borders the Bay of Naples which turns into the Mediterranean Sea.  The city is divided into 30 quarters.  The coordinates are: 40 N, 14 E.

6. Geography and Climate!!!  Naples’ geography is a area in which the area is slightly rocky and slopes into a body of water. Volcanoes are on the other side of Naples. This area is considered a “geologically active” region.  In Naples, you have Mediterranean weather all year long. Naples has warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. 7. Gigantic Population!  The third largest city in Italy is Naples. It has an approximate population of around 1 million. Rome is the first and then Milan.  Naples has a higher birth rate than any other place in Italy.  98.5% of the citizens of Naples are Italian.  Naples has more females than males.

8. Naples’ Economy  Naples is the fourth richest city in Italy. Naples’ economy depends on manufacturing and tourism. Most jobs are in the department of public services, manufacturing, commerce, construction, and transportation.  Naples manufactures: automobiles, ships, cement, textiles, chemical products, locomotives, and office machinery.  The Bay of Naples plays an important role in distribution of manufactured products.  Even though Naples’ economy has greatly improved over the years, Naples suffers from high unemployment.

9. Festivals All Year!!  Settembre- Feast of San Gennaro -This religious holiday and annual festival honors the patron saint of Naples.  Aprile- Sapori & Saperi- A food event exhibiting all Italian food from around the country.  Luglio-Settembre- Festival of Flegree Villas- An event sowing all of the archeology in the area.  Dicembre- Gennaio- Christmas- This festival is a mix of all the different cultures in Naples to celebrate the universal holiday.  Novembre-Gennaio- Art in the Windows- In this event, all kinds of art are shown in shop windows.

10. Attractions and more….  Teatro di San Carlo- This theatre is the oldest used setting in Europe. It was founded by the Bourbon Charles VII of Naples.  Piazza del Plesbiscito- This square was one of the biggest in the city. It was named for the day Naples became a part of the Kingdom of Italy.  Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte- A museum full of beautiful Neapolitan paintings, decorative art, and Ancient Roman sculptures.

12. Did You Know…………  Did you know that pizza was originally created in Naples??  Did you know that Naples was conquered by two major nations??  Did you know that Naples had a major cholera epidemic in 1884, caused by bad sewage?  Did you know Naples is the 91 st richest city in the world?
