3 Locate the Verb 1. Joey ran the mile faster than anyone else. 2. The students are excited for the fieldtrip. 3. The teacher asked me a difficult question. 4. I am ready for the test today. 5. Brian fried eggs for his breakfast. 6. Everyone sat for their school pictures today. 7. The grocery store only sells pumpkins in October. 8. The party is on Saturday. 9. The horror movie scared me. 10. When I arrived at school, I realized I forgot my homework. (3 verbs)

4 Action Verbs Verbs that express action—(The subject of the sentence DOES, DID, or WILL DO something.) Sarah drove to the store. I ate the last piece of pizza. Andrea raked the leaves outside. The mechanic will finish the oil change after lunch.

5 Linking Verbs Verbs that connect the subject to something that describes or renames the subject—do not show action. The view appeared breathtaking. I am sorry. She seemed nervous yesterday. They have been sick all week.

6 Action or Linking? 1. Clarissa chose the ham sandwich for lunch. 2. Ryan is a skilled pianist. 3. Stuart fixed the table with a screwdriver. 4. Your mother seemed upset this morning. 5. The bread smells wonderful. 6. I understood the new rules Joe presented at the meeting. 7. They are noisy neighbors. 8. Scott wanted another hamburger, but he was full. 9. I brushed my teeth before the meeting. 10. The soup tastes delicious.

7 Helping Verbs A small verb that helps a main verb in a sentence. Michael has arrived. I must speak to him. We are planning a trip. Classes will end soon. They could have finished today. Is Am Are Was Were Be Being Been Has Have Had Do Does Did Shall Will Should Would May Might Must Can Could

8 Helping Verbs 1. Isabel has returned from a vacation in Florida. 2. She has planned to tell us all about it. 3. Isabel would have answered every question about her trip. 4. Our club officers have been looking for someone to speak. 5. The officers have asked Isabel to the meeting. 6. They have organized an interesting meeting. 7. Every detail of the meeting has been planned carefully. 8. The lights were dimmed for Isabel’s slide show. 9. She said that alligators had been seen in some places. 10. Pets and farm animals were threatened by them.
