2 Today’s Presentation Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update
FSAE Rules Committee - Brief Overview 2016 Rules - Review of new/revised FSAE Rules 2016 Rules - FSUK Supplementary Rules 2017 Rules - Possible Future Changes

3 FSAE Rules Committee Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update
Currently around 25 members Representatives from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Italy, Japan & UK Mixture of former competitors, event organisers and faculty advisors with a broad range of specialisms Sub-committees for Admin, Aero, Chassis/Structures, IC Powertrains, EV Powertrains, Static Events & Dynamic Events Business primarily conducted via WebEx and All rules changes require majority approval

4 2016 FSAE Rules Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update
2016 is a “minor and safety-critical changes only” year Rules were published in May – Clarifications may be published following 2015 US and European events

5 T3.14 - Front Hoop Bracing Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update
“T The driver’s feet and legs must be completely contained within the Major Structure of the Frame. While the driver’s feet are touching the pedals, in side and front views, no part of the driver’s feet or legs can extend above or outside of the Major Structure of the Frame.”

6 T3.38 – Composite Anti-Intrusion Plates
Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update T3.38 – Composite Anti-Intrusion Plates Clarification that composite AIP’s are allowed Physical test to prove equivalency required Either dynamic (sled / drop test) or quasi-static (three point bending + perimeter shear) Functionality already captured in 2015 SES Template PART AF – Alternative Frame Rules Minor change to notice of intent process and updates to non-applicable rules. Note – FSUK will continue to only accept AFRs approved by other events.

7 IC1.6.1 / IC1.7.3 – Turbo & Superchargers
Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update IC1.6.1 / IC1.7.3 – Turbo & Superchargers Capture of 2015 clarification for pop-off, recirculation valves and intercoolers

8 IC1.9.1 – Low Pressure Fuel Injection Systems
Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update IC1.9.1 – Low Pressure Fuel Injection Systems Additional wording to note b): “The use of fuel rails made from plastic, carbon fibre or rapid prototyping flammable materials is prohibited. However, the use of unmodified OEM Fuel Rails manufactured from these materials is acceptable.” IC1.11 to IC1.16 – Electronic Throttle Control Additional wording in each sub-section of the ETC rules Likely to be clarified following experience of 2015 events

9 IC2.6 – Fuel Filler / Sight Tubes IC4.4.4 – Lithium Batteries
Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update IC2.6 – Fuel Filler / Sight Tubes Reworded after feedback from FSAE Japan – no change to 2015 intent. IC4.4.4 – Lithium Batteries Reworded following 2015 clarification and consultation with battery manufacturers: “Batteries packs based on Lithium Chemistry: a) Must have overcurrent protection that trips at or below the maximum specified discharge current of the cells. b) Must have a rigid, sturdy and fire retardant casing. c) Must be separated from the driver by a firewall as specified in T4.5.”

10 EV4.12 – Tractive System Active Light
Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update IC4.6 – IC Voltage Limits Reworded, capturing and expanding on the 2015 clarification: “The following systems are excluded from this voltage limit: a. High voltage systems for ignition b. High voltage systems for injectors c. Voltages internal to OEM charging systems designed for <60VDC output.” EV4.12 – Tractive System Active Light Entirely reworded for 2016 – changes too numerous to list here.

11 Possible 2016 Clarification
Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update Possible 2016 Clarification Noise limit at idle may be revised, to be reviewed at next committee meeting. 2016 Formula Student Supplementary Rules Will follow same “minor or safety-critical only changes” principle 4WD EV Power limit may be reviewed again following 2015 change Submission dates for IAD Report and SES may be earlier Expect to publish on the FS website by 1st Sept 2015

12 Possible 2017 Changes Formula Student 2015 – Future Rules Update
Restrictions on Professional Drivers Introduction of 5th Percentile “Madam Percette” template Major review of entire Cost Event Increase in allowed engine size All of the above items were already discussed for 2015/16 but were pushed back to 2017, we welcome your feedback on these and any other possible changes you may wish to suggest.
