2 HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Charlie Bender 11/22 On November 6, dictionaries were distributed to all the third graders at San Pablo Elementary school. We were introduced by Mrs. Carroll Miniard, the lead third grade teacher. The children were told about Kiwanis and Rotary, how both organizations exist to serve and help local schools, and that Kiwanis and Rotary are partnering to distribute dictionaries to all third graders at the Beaches. Jim Lee, who attended San Pablo ?? years ago, presented. The children asked questions, and wanted to know how the Kiwanis name came about. They were very excited about getting their own dictionary to take home. Teachers mentioned that for some children this would be their only book at home. Participating Kiwanians were Jim Lee, Charlie Bender, Hugh Patterson and Doris Barnes. Jim Lucas of Rotary assisted. On November 4, Rotary distributed dictionaries to Seabreeze Elementary school. Doris Barnes represented Kiwanis. Doris Barnes The annual statewide FLORIDA DISTRICT ZONE CONFERENCE will be held Saturday, February 7th in Lake City. Please mark your calendars to attend. The Lake City session will run from 9:00 AM until noon and will include Divisions 3, 4, 5, and 6. It is most important the all club officers, board members and committee chairs attend. (actually this means that virtually all active club members should attend.) Please let President Jim Lee know by January 10th that you will go. He needs needs to notify Lt. Governor Brad Davis then. Even if you have participated in several of these Zone Conferences before, the sessions each year include new and fresh ideas for being a more effective Kiwanian; and it certainly will be worth your time. I promise that you will be glad you went! The expression “Nunc Kee-wan-nis” meant broadly, “we trade” or “we share our talents”. As a coined word, however, “Kiwanis” has no meaning except as the name of a leading international service club. Feb 7 - Division 5 Zone Conference, Lake City, FL June 25-28 - Kiwanis international, Nashville, TN August 27-30 - Florida Kiwanis, Orlando 2008-2009 ANNUAL ZONE CONFERENCE KIWANIS EDUCATION After several meetings with the Principal of Mayport Elementary and the Guidance Counselor, the committee from Jacksonville Beaches Kiwanis Club held the kick- off meeting today with 17 students from grades 3, 4, and 5 in the media room (library) at the school Principal, Yvonne Ferguson and Faculty Advisor, Jan Rawlins made a great introduction with visuals from Kiwanis International, explaining why this initial group was selected. Kiwanis Advisor, John Bates and committee, Walt Pfeil, Debbie Johnson, and Ed Robinson, introduced themselves, welcomed the Kids, and helped them nominate and elect their slate of offices for the year. Fruit juices and cookies, courtesy of the school, were served. There was great enthusiasm among the kids, the school management, and our committee. The K- Kids Club will meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 12:30 to 1:30 PM, when classes have early dismissal and buses are there immediately following the meeting. The Kids were given K-Kids brochures, parents information, the principal’s letter to the parents to take home with them. The next meeting, on Wednesday, November 19th at 12:30 includes parents and Kids, with lunch provided by The Beaches Kiwanis. SPEAKER Walt Pfeil made us laugh! President James Lee and Dick Brand K-KIDS CLUB Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.
