Main thing to look for in motors: Main thing to look for in motors: 1.Horse Power 2.Voltage Level 3.Frequency 4.RPM (Revolution Per Minute) 5.Single or three phase The outside of a motor consist of: The outside of a motor consist of: 1.Key 2.Fins 3.Fan The inside of a motor consists of: The inside of a motor consists of: 1.Rotor 2.Bearings 3.Stator (cylindrical shell) Quick tips on motors: Quick tips on motors: 1.motors create a lot of heat, and to cool them down heat is transported through the fins to the fan which is the cooling agent. 2.The rotor and the stator form the heart of the motor. 3.We use a Y to delta connection because of the high voltage needed for starting (Y) and the the system goes to low voltage (delta). The project is about a correlation between vibration and electrical methods to find faults in motors. it’s showing whether combining the two methods is actually useful or not. The vibration method is well established and used in industry everywhere, but the electrical method has come into play recently for motors that are in hard to reach places, like under water or inside nuclear plants. Combining the two methods ensures as much accuracy as possible in finding the fault, and that is how the project was inspired The advantages of using the vibration method: Good operating and performance characteristics. Can detect all types of faults. Large quantity and variety of devices utilized. The advantages of using the electrical method: Being able to get measurements from long distance. Cheaper and easier to measure and store. Signals can be acquired from motor itself without the needing sensors. Combining vibration and electrical is useful in most faults’ detection but not all. The Explorer 4000 is capable of using both electrical and vibration methods to detect motor faults.
