1 Hydro Power Video: introduction to hydro power
Information from factsheet: Technology basics – page 1 The key elements of a hydro power system – page 1 Feed in Tariff information – page 1 Benefits for your community – page 2 Myth busting facts – page 2 Checklist: is hydro power the right technology for my community? – page 3 Subregional information and contacts – page 4 Case studies This is an introductory slide of what’s covered within the hydro slides. Go to next slide to start delivering presentation.

2 Hydro power – the basics
How does hydro power work? Hydroelectricity or hydro power systems use running water to generate electricity using a turbine or other devices. Amount of energy depends on: Head: how far the water is falling Flow: how much water is flowing Use the information contained in page 1 of the factsheet through this slide An introduction to hydro power systems

3 Hydro power – Feed In Tariffs
Generating a source of income for your community from hydro power What are Feed in Tariffs Government incentive to encourage the generation of renewable electricity Owners of hydro power systems can make money from the sale of the electricity generated Guaranteed for 20 years Retail price index linked Very attractive return on your community investment Tariffs currently at their highest but will be reduced in the future Use the information contained in the page 1 of the factsheet through this slide

4 Hydro power – Benefits and Myths
What benefits could hydro power generate for your community Protection against rising fuel prices Make money for your community More local jobs Low maintenance technology Safeguard from flood risk Reduce your carbon emissions Improve community well-being Use the information contained in the page 2 of the factsheet for this slide What are the common myths surrounding hydro power systems Hydro power harms the environment Hydro power reduces rural tourism

5 Hydro power – Checklist
Is hydro power suitable for your community? Site: is river or stream suitable? Environment Agency permission Land/Building owner permission Connection to National Grid Planning permission Use the information contained in the page 3 of the factsheet for this slide

6 Hydro Power – Case studies
North West Case Study – Heron Mill hydro power Use the case study: Heron Mill hydro power (North West) from the website: Use the case study: A community hydro-electric scheme in Settle (UK) from the website: Heron Mill Case Study Transcript from website: During 2009/2010 Heron Corn Mill installed a 100kW Kaplan propellertype hydropower turbine. This innovative and exciting addition will provide green energy for the entire complex, creating sustainability for the Trust and bringing new avenues of educational and artistic potential. In effect, we are diverting the course of the River Bela from the watermill's historic commercial industry to a contemporary creative industry. The scheme was designed by Inter Hydro Technology with the turbine built by NHT Engineering and civil engineering undertaken by Askam Construction LTD. The project highlights the importance of our primary resource - the river, and how this has been the reason why water powered industry has been the mainstay of our location for centuries. Future interpretation for the site will include opening up and maximising viewing access to the old mechanics of the waterwheel in contrast to the modern technologies of the hydro turbine. A time-lapse video of the hydro installation construction can be viewed here. An audio/visual presentation and talk on the new social setting of Heron Corn Mill and the role hydro power has played in the past, present and future of the site can be arranged for groups of 6 or more, and also includes a tour of the hydro power installation and refreshments in the barn. Please get in touch for booking. Funding for the turbine project began with huge support from the major funder of the project, The Northern Rock Foundation. Further grants from private trusts and foundations were very kindly given. A loan from Charity Bank was obtained to complete the project. More North West examples can be found on page 4 of the factsheets for each subregion UK Case Study – A community hydro-electric scheme in Settle
