Jaques Cartier went on a expedition in 1534.The purpose of his expedition was to find the northwest passage to Asia. Instead of finding the northwest passage he found the St. Lawrence River. He found and claimed present-day Canada for France.

Jaques Cartier's voyage was successful, but he wasn’t successful at doing the things he planed. He was looking for the Northwest Passage to Asia,but he wasn’t really successful at that instead he was successful at finding the St. Lawrence River. Cartier didn’t do exactly what he wanted, but he still did something that was important to everyone. Other Interesting Information Was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the river Cartier named Canada Francis the First sponsored Cartier sailed with two ships led three expeditions
