What is a Fraction? KEY
6
Adding and Subtracting Fractions When adding or subtracting fractions, they must have a common denominator. In order to do this, you must find a number that both of the denominators in the problem can multiply to. When you find a number, you have to multiply the numerator by the same number you used to get the common denominator. Once you have found a common denominator, the problem should look something like this. KEY
7
HINT EACH OF THE FRACTIONS WILL BE MULTIPLIED BY A DIFFERENT NUMBER TO REACH A COMMON DENOMINATOR KEY
8
Multiplying Fractions When multiplying fractions, multiply the first numerator by the second numerator. Do this with the denominators as well! KEY
9
HINT Multiply across the top and then multiply across the bottom. Don’t forget to simplify your answer! KEY
10
Dividing Fractions Dividing is a little different. When dividing, be sure to change any mixed number into an improper fraction. This will make it easier to divide. Take the second fraction and switch the numerator and the denominator (Flip the top number and the bottom number). Now you must multiply these fractions and simplify to get your final answer. KEY
11
Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions Depending on how the question wants your answer to look like, your answer may be left improper or it may need to be changed into a mixed number. KEY
