2. Who were the Spanish? Essential Questions. Spain itself- regional differences- Spain is very diverse. How diverse? How did Spain as we know it get to be Spain? Who were the principal actors in early Spain? What was the basis of Spanish economics and politics? What were Spanish cultural traditions?

Fall of Muslim Spain Christian kingdoms in Spain began the Reconquista-the reconquest of the lands Muslims had taken in 711. 1250 C.E.: Spain consisted of three Christian kingdoms: Portugal in the west, Castile in the center and Aragon on the Mediterranean coast. Only Granada in the south remained in the hands of the Moors, or Spanish Muslims.

16. The Treaty of Tordesillas June 7, 1494: Spain and Portugal agreed to divide the “newly discovered” lands outside of Europe. Spain would control the territory west of the line and Portugal to the east.
