Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 6 Framing Question “Almost everything the U.S. is doing right now to connect students with college is probably necessary- but it’s not sufficient if we want more students to be successful in college.” Conley 2010 How does David Conley in this interview with PDK articulate his position in support of his thesis?

Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 7 Alignment on Purpose - Conley’s Interview A Text based discussion Please remember to: refer to the text by using page numbers to substantiate your point, build on what others say referring to others by their name, don’t step on another’s talk, converse directly, make the assumptions underlying your comments explicit to others, watch your own “air time”.

Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 8 Questions this raises for us… Are there ways we should be thinking about influencing our work and the work of schools based on our reading of this interview? How can we help schools refocus on our mission of college readiness for all students amidst the competing initiatives, allegiances, and accountabilities facing school leaders?

Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 11 AP Observation Tool September 13, 2010 11

Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 12 Observation Tool Goals The purpose of the AP Observation Tool is to facilitate collaboration and feedback between the Administrator and the AP teacher so that every student has the highest quality AP course experience. The Observation Tool will guide the Administrator and AP Teacher through an iterative, structured, and collaborative goal setting, observation, and feedback discussion process. The goal of providing the highest quality AP course experience for each student will be reached by:  facilitating AP classroom observation, and by encouraging collaboration to meet the district, administrator, and teacher objectives for AP,  providing teachers with valuable administrative support, feedback, and an opportunity to self-reflect on their teaching,  helping administrators properly and thoughtfully observe the AP classroom and provide meaningful feedback based on observed behaviors. The desired outcome is a thoughtful, meaningful conversation between the Administrator and AP teacher which gives the teacher valuable feedback on student behaviors and cognitive engagement as well as teachers’ practice, suggests Professional Development opportunities, and encourages Teacher and Administrator self-reflection. 12

Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 13 Observation Tool Background Why has the College Board decided to build an Observation Tool for Administrators?  The demographic composition of AP students is changing, and it will become increasingly important for administrators to help teachers understand how to reach the “new” AP student.  Veteran AP teachers are beginning to retire, and the new, less experienced teachers will need even more support and guidance from their administrators.  Many AP subjects are undergoing a massive redesign, and the Observation Tool will help administrators keep current with the new courses and associated instructional strategies.  It is not expected that administrators would have in depth content knowledge for every single AP subject taught in their school, so the Observation Tool provides them with pertinent course information to help them understand enough content and characteristics to make meaningful recommendations.  The College Board is in a unique position to provide guidance around key characteristics of a successful AP classroom as well as key instructional strategies to look for. 13

Leadership Cohort Meeting September 21, 2010 14 How can you help us? We want to give you the opportunity to tell us how to best serve you, your AP Teachers, and your AP Students through this Observation Tool. A short questionnaire about your classroom observation practices has been provided to you along with this introduction to the Observation Tool. We estimate that this should take you about 10 minutes to complete. Please fill out this questionnaire and bring it with you on September 21 st, or alternatively, you can e-mail it in advance to innovation@collegeboard.org.innovation@collegeboard.org Thank you for your help and input!
