3 Mrs. Eleanor Ramsay, a very wealthy old lady, has shared a flat with her cat, Rastus, for a great many years. Wealthy-adj. 富有的 Share-v. 共享: --shared her chocolate bar with a friend. 和朋友们共享巧克力 A great many-adj. 很多 Rastus leads an orderly life. Orderly-adj. 有秩序的, 整齐的, 整洁的 --Lead a normal / quiet / exciting / peaceful life

4 Three days after Rastus’ disappearance, Mrs. Ramsay received an anonymous letter. Anonymous-adj. 匿名的 --an anonymous letter; 匿名信 --an anonymous phone call. 匿名电话 The letter stated that Rastus was in safe hands and would be returned immediately if Mrs. Ramsay paid a ransom of 1, 000 pounds. State-vt. 声明, 陈述, 规定 --state one‘s views 陈述自己的观点 In safe hands- 在可靠的人手里 Ransom-n. 赎金

5 Mrs. Ramsay was instructed to place the money in a cardboard box and leave it outside her door. Instruct-vt. 命令, 指示 --He was instructed to sail for New York. 他奉命前往纽约。 --Instruction-n. 指示, 用法说明 ( 书 ) She withdrew 1,000 pounds from her bank and followed the kidnapper’s instructions. Place-n. 放到某一特定的位置或地方 --He placed the delicate glass on the table.

6 At first, she decided to go to the police, but fearing that she would never see Rastus again— the letter had made that quite clear—she changed her mind. Fear-v. 害怕, 畏惧 --feared the test results. 为考试结果担心 --I fear (that) he will get ill. 我担心他会生病。 --Old people fear to leave their houses.

7 The next morning, the box disappeared but Mrs. Ramsay was sure that the kidnapper would keep his word. Word-n. 誓约:保证或诺言;宣誓的意图 --She has kept her word. 她遵守诺言 --Give me your word! --OK. You have my words. Sure enough, Rastus arrived punctually at seven o’clock that evening. Sure enough- 果真, 的的确确 --She said she would come, and sure enough, there she was.

8 The police were astounded when Mrs. Ramsay told them what she had done. Astounded-adj. 令人惊骇的 She explained that Rastus was very dear to her. Considering the amount she paid, he was dear in more ways than one! Dear-adj. 昂贵的 --That one is too dear,; I would like a cheaper one. 那个太贵了, 我想要一个便宜点儿的. 非常受珍视的;宝贵的: --lost everything dear to them. 失去他们珍爱的一 切
