1 Background Vocabulary

2 Our story, Two Days in May, is about deer that find their way into the city. Let’s find out what we know about deer.

3 Deer live on every continent except Antarctica.
Where do deer live? Deer live on every continent except Antarctica. Deer can usually be found in places where there are woods and grassy areas. The deer use the woods for cover and shelter and the grassy areas for food.

4 DEER What do deer eat? Deer usually eat:
Grass, leaves, stems, berries, herbs, acorns, mushrooms, wild fruit and farm crops like corn and soy beans.

5 DEER Male deer are usually called bucks.
Female deer are usually called does. Young deer are usually called fawns or calves.

6 Use what you know about deer
Use what you know about deer. Why would it be unusual to see deer in the city?

7 Two Days in May Vocabulary

8 Appreciate I gave my mom flowers to show her how much
I appreciate her. Appreciate means to enjoy and understand.

9 Grazing The deer were grazing in the field.
Grazing means eating growing plants.

10 Population The population of Conowingo, MD is about 4,500 people.
Population means the number of people or animals living in a certain place.

11 Starve Deer try and find food anywhere, so they don’t starve.
To starve means to suffer or die from not having enough food.

12 Surrounding The fence is surrounding the garden to keep the deer out.
Surrounding means on all sides of.

13 Territory The dog growled to protect its territory. Territory means an
area of land.

14 Wander Sometimes deer wander onto roads. Wander means to move
from place to place without reason.
