Radio It took a series of inventions, just like the newspaper: Discovery of electromagnetic waves (Maxwell and Hertz) Turning those waves into codes (Marconi) Transforming human speech into codes (Forest and Fessenden) Original use was private communication, Harry Davis decided it should be broadcast “First Commercial Radio Broadcast: the Harding-Cox presidential election returns on KDKA in Pittsburgh, November 2, 1920” (Stephens, 2007, p. 269)

Television The first television broadcast was two 15 minute newscasts daily to a tiny audience in New York in 1941 by CBS Picture quality was originally so poor that you could barely make out the image. They didn’t have cameras stationed anywhere, so the image used when reporting about Pearl Harbor was a U.S. flag blown by a fan in the studio.
