Social networks are Online communities intended for connecting with: Friends Peers Co-workers Family By joining social networks, you may also be connecting with: Strangers Future Employers

72% of teens have a profile on a social network 47% of teens with profiles have them set to public… This means ANYONE can view them! 39% of teens have posted things online that they later regretted 26% of teens know someone that something bad happened to because of information or photos posted online 13% of teens have broken into someone else’s account

People online aren’t always who they claim to be Once a photo is posted on the Internet, it’s on the web forever When you post your whereabouts, anyone who can view your profile knows where you are People you may not want to see certain things may be able to see them Parents, teachers, peers, current/future employers, colleges Online information spreads like a virus

Damage your reputation Cause you to be kicked out of clubs or off of sports teams Cause you to miss out on a scholarship, college admission, or job opportunity Some online actions can have legal consequences Bullying, hacking, creating false profiles Click to Watch Video

Keep personal information private Don’t add people as friends that you don’t know Set your profile and photos to Private Never give your password out… Even to your best friend Don’t use social networking to bully others

Think before you post Never meet anyone you’ve met online in person Tell an adult about anything inappropriate that has happened to you or that you’ve seen on the Internet Obscene material, bullying, solicitations
