Long Coastline Poor Farmland People were isolated because of the mountains. They belonged to independent city-states. They did not have a sense of country. The Greeks traded with many different peoples. They were exposed to many different Ideas. Effects of the Geography

2 Ancient Greece Religion Polytheism--The belief in many gods.
The gods lived on Mt Olympus. They looked and acted like humans. Government Aristocracy A government ruled by a few wealthy people. 1st Greek government. Zeus-King of the gods Mt Olympus Only men born in Athens were allowed to participate in the government. Democracy Government by the people. Started in ancient Athens. Direct Democracy Representative Democracy United States form of Democracy We elect representatives who vote on our laws. Greek form of Democracy All people voted on all laws

3 Golden Age Of Greece Athens Sparta Differences Athens had a
democratic form of government Both joined the Delian League Sparta had a military society. Athens had a strong Navy. Sparta had a strong Army Women in Sparta had more rights than women in Athens Sparta and other Greek city-states rebel. They destroy farms and homes around Athens. Sparta and it’s allies win the war. Athens takes funds from the League and builds projects in Athens. This upset other members, they revolted against Athens. The Delian League was an alliance between Greek City-States

4 Brilliant Military Mind
Alexander The Great Brilliant Military Mind Courageous Confident Phalanx Formation Alexander conquered and built a large empire that covered parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia Alexander built the great city of Alexandria in Egypt. This city became a great city of learning because of the libraries and schools Alexander had built.
