Coffee Derek Miller Jenna Fidel Castro Paige Waldron Period 12

THESIS ! The excessive amounts of coffee that Americans drink will eventually catch up to society with the destruction of ecosystems and deforestation!!!!! More than 77 percent of all adults over 18 or 161 million people drink coffee on a daily or occasional basis

Why do we NEEEED coffee? 1.TO DRINK IT OF COURSE!! IT IS MUY DELICIOUSO! (can’t live without it) 2.Many people take coffee grinds and deposit them into their composite bin to sit for a while or put them straight into the garden. The minerals in the grounds are actually good for the soil and keep it moist and good for growing. 3.You can also use it on your hands. Ew why would you wanna do that?! Well see, if your hands smell after preparing food or working in the kitchen and you just rub some grinds on them, it will deodorize and take the smell away! 4.Coffee makes the world go round!

Environmental Consequences The coffee growing process includes pesticides, fertilizers, and harmful chemicals. For sun grown coffee, countless innocent trees are cut down, completely depleting their tree population. Shade grown coffee might have been more expensive, but with its decline the environment is paying the price.

Environmental Consequences Wet processing is when beans are ground and divided, the leftovers from this process lead to water pollution. The main problem area in recent years has been economic sustainability, which has led to the abandonment of farms and reduction of cash income.

What does the industry say coffee is doing? Over twenty million people work in the coffee industry around the world. With coffee being one of the world’s most important resources, people become concerned with problems within the industry. While Americans have been relying on this resource, many think about the conditions of the workers who produce it and also how it is effecting the environment.

Governments play a huge role in the coffee industry. In some countries, the government controls it completely. Processers often sell coffee cherries to the government. The government then sells the coffee to exporters or brokers. A problem that many are not aware of is how the prices on coffee greatly affect farmers. Numerous coffee farmers get prices for their coffee that are much less than the cost of production. This is very bad for farmers because it leads them to a great amount of profit lost.

A solution to this problem.. A solution that would address problems surrounding coffee would be Fair Trade. Fair Trade is a certification given to companies that ensures fair prices are given to farms. Fair Trade would put many at ease, knowing they purchased their coffee under fair conditions. Hopefully, one day all coffee in the United States will be Fair Trade certified, giving workers their rights and improvement for our environment.

Cultural Consequences Many people are addicted to coffee around the world. The main issue with coffee is the short boost of energy you get from it, until you need more, and that there is an ongoing cycle of needing coffee.
