Principles of Flight Chapter 1 – Lift and Weight

Lift and Weight Issac Newton’s Law: Every Action has an equal and opposite reaction. How can air support an aircraft Air is a substance, so it exerts a force. Blow between two pieces of paper, they get sucked together not blown apart

Wind Tunnel Tests Air has to travel round the constriction (B) so it travels faster As it is travelling faster the air pressure drops Airspeed up and air pressure increases again at C

Lift Blowing over a piece of paper lifts it up. The pressure above is lower than below This lifts the paper up. The same applies for an aerofoil or wing.

Lift As the wing is tilted up at the front it produced downwash This adds to the lift Lift is not distributed evenly The most lift is generated at the most curved part.

How Lift Varies Several Factors effect Lift: A) Airspeed B) Angle of Attack C) Air Density D) Wing Shape and Area

Lift and Weight in Balance If Lift is greater that weight the aircraft climbs If Lift is less than Weight the aircraft drops If lift and weight are equal the aircraft stays level
