2 Things to keep in mind before we start: Don’t spend wildly. You need to make sure you are able to get the most out of the money you are allowed to spend. You will not be able to buy anything and everything you want. Ex: Don’t spend all your money on weapons. 2. Decisions you make will effect your travels along the Silk Road during “Scenarios” So, think ahead and try to plan for anything and everything. You never know what might happen along the Silk Road. 3. The Journal is to help us THINK about what we are going to buy and to help us prepare. The actually buying will be later.

4 #1 QUESTION Who is going to be traveling with you? You may choose only one person and tell what their relation to you is.

5 #2 Caravan The Silk Road Caravan was made up of the Bactrian Camel. This camel was the ideal animal for traveling the Silk Road. Very durable and strong, this Camel could withstand extreme heat and extreme cold. Caravan to purchase: 2 Camels Price: $300 total

6 #3 Training Along the Silk Road, you may encounter thieves. If attacked, you need to be able to defend yourself. So, you must do some training before you set out on this journey. You have three choices. Select one. Tae Kwan Do. $ 10 Martial Arts. $ 30 Ninja. $ 50

7 #4. What are you Bringing The main purpose of the Silk Road is to trade with other parts of the world. Silk was the main item traded, but the ancient Chinese also brought with them other valuable things that Europeans would want. Decide what you are going to bring with to trade. It is up to what and how much you bring. Silk: $10/spool Jade: $5/piece Spices: $5/pound Ivory: $5/piece

8 #5. What are you trying to get? IF you are able to make it to the end of the Silk Road and have not been robbed of your silk, what will you trade your silk for? Below are some of the more common things Chinese would trade for in Europe. Decide on what you are trying to get: Gold Silver Gems glassware

9 #6. Route In planning your Silk Road journey, a major decision is the route you will take. The Silk Road was not just one lone path, but multiple paths. Below, you will select the route your Caravan will travel. Northern Route: Gobi Desert and Taklamakan Desert Central Route: Qinling Mountains and Taklamakan Desert Southern Route: Guangzi Region and Himalayan Mountains

10 #7 Supplies Number 1-10 on your sheet. Try to list ten supplies that you think would be essential for this type of trip. Things to think about (camping, cooking, eating, cleaning, washing, drinking, sleeping, fixing).

11 #8 Grocery List Number 1-5 on your sheet. Think about 5 food items that would be very important to take with you. Remember, there is no refrigeration, food has to last. Don’t count on hunting the whole way as there were not many animals right on the trail.

12 #9. Weapons The Silk Road traveler would be sure to include weapons for their trip. The Silk Road was very dangers, with thieves constantly present, along with wild animals such as the Bengal Tiger, Cobra, and Dhole (wild dog). What will you bring to protect yourself?

14 #10. Boredom Busters 1 year in a caravan can get long. What would you take with you to cut into that boredom? List at least three items you could take with you and list three things you could plan to do along the way to entertain yourself. *2010 Twist: It can be something from Present day, that wouldn’t be in ancient China.
